Over 25 years Mike has become Victoria’s most prominent lawyer in the areas of libel, freedom of expression and media law. While many of his cases involve these areas, he also has a substantial practice in commercial and estate litigation. He also continues to assist injured workers in their dealings with the Workers Compensation Board.
Recent successes include the successful defence of free expression in Andrew Weaver v. Tim Ball; establishing limits on renewal rights in commercial leases in 1111207 BC Ltd. v. Masala Bites Enterprises Ltd., and successfully obtaining significant damages for a wrongfully dismissed employee in Polard v. ARO.
Mike has appeared before the Provincial Court of British Columbia; the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the British Columbia Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Canada, the Ontario Superior Court, the Superior Court of Wayne County, Michigan, U.S.A., the Labour Relations Board; the Employment Standards Tribunal, the Social Security Tribunal of Canada, the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal, the Workers’ Compensation Review Board and the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Tribunal. In addition, Mike has represented clients at numerous mediations, arbitrations and informal settlement discussions.
